Smit’s lake: green dragon heart near Ogulin
About 13 kilometers away from the city of Ogulin, a green dragon heart situated itself in the land of legends. We wrote about Klek and its witches, and this time, it’s Šmit’s lake turn, known for its beautiful emerald green color and dragon legend.

Šmits’ Lake, originally called Green Lake, is located in Donje Zagorje and is separated into Big Lake and Little Lake. Little Lake gets the water from Rupećica cave and fills Big Lake which then continues its flow underground.
It might seem big in the pictures, but it takes you about 5-7 minutes to go around it, however, we are sure you will come here with the intention of enjoying it for a little longer, so a picnic by the lake sounds like a great idea.
The area of the lake and the cave is filled with flora and fauna and a sanctuary of endemic species, so make sure you don’t leave trails after you finish, as the legend should be the only one to remain.

Yes.. the legend… It is believed that the dragon used to reside by the lake, and one day, it caught a young girl who was then saved by St. George. Besides the story, the only visible proof that survived, throughout all these years, is the imprinted hoof of the St. Georges’ horse on the stone by the lake.

According to the newest information, Šmit’s Lake and the area around Zagorska Mrežnica and Sabljaci Lake should soon receive an interactive walking trail and virtual guide which is going to allow anyone who visits to learn and investigate more. We will update you about it as soon as we learn more, and until then, make sure you visit this beautiful place as you will not regret it.
