Italy is home to many spectacular waterfalls, and among them, natural waterfalls, located in hidden corners of beautiful landscapes, stand out. While some, like the Marmore Falls, are known for their imposing height and human intervention, others retain their natural beauty, shaped solely by the power of water and rocks. One such pearl is the Verde Waterfalls (Cascate del Verde), located in the Abruzzo region, in the Verde Regional Nature Reserve (Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde).

This waterfall is not only the highest natural waterfall in the Apennines but also one of the most magnificent natural wonders of Italy. It is located in the small town of Borrello, in the valley of the Sangro River, at an altitude of between 400 and 900 meters. It consists of three powerful cascades that fall from a height of over 200 meters, creating a spectacular sight that leaves you breathless. The water falls from mighty moss-covered rocks, forming travertine terraces that give this waterfall a special look. Interestingly, this natural phenomenon is protected by the European directive on habitat conservation, which further emphasizes its value and uniqueness.

This area was declared a WWF oasis in 1997, and in 2001 it became an official nature reserve, covering an area of ​​287.5 hectares and representing a true paradise for nature lovers. It is surrounded by a dense forest of white pine, up to 25 meters high, and a rich flora that includes more than 30 species of orchids. Rare species such as Ophrys insectifera are particularly fascinating, and they are known for their unusual flower shape that resembles an insect.

Mosses and ferns dominate the humid areas, while the drier slopes are covered with macchia, holm oak, and broom, creating a unique contrast of colors and textures.

However, this reserve is not only home to a rich flora but also the habitat of numerous animal species. Among them, the wild cat, the river crayfish, as well as various birds of prey that live on the cliffs above the waterfall, stand out. Amphibians, such as salamanders and frogs, can also be seen here, enjoying the humid and shady environment of the waterfall.

The easiest way to get to the Verde Falls is by car, following the signs for Borrello. The park is open year-round, and spring and early fall are ideal for visiting when the falls are at their most abundant due to heavy rains. Visitors can enjoy the well-maintained trails and viewpoints that offer spectacular views of the falls and the river valley, and you will find the first viewpoint after just a 20-minute walk from the parking lot. However, the best view of the entire waterfall is from the nearby meadow, which allows for a full view of its height and power.

There are also educational boards along the trails that explain the geological and biological features of the park, making the visit not only visually stunning but also an educational experience.
