Balkana is one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

When the road recently took me towards Kupres, along the passage through the town of Mrkonjić, I decided to detour a bit to visit the picnic area and Lake Balkana.

And I wasn’t wrong, the only thing that spoiled my impression was the annoying rain.

Lake Balkana is located at the heart of Lisina Mountain. It is actually two artificial lakes, Big and Small, built in the 1950s, and today they are a true paradise for all lovers of nature and recreation. It is especially beautiful in winter when it snows or in autumn when the leaves change color.

In summer, however, when the water temperature in Small lake reaches a pleasant 20 °C, this is the right place for swimming and sunbathing. At the same time, Big lake is known for its wealth of fish, especially trout, which makes it a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts. For those who want a more active vacation, sports activities are available: courts for basketball, indoor soccer, handball, and beach volleyball.

For those who want to extend their stay, there is a tourist infrastructure that includes a restaurant, bungalows, and various facilities adapted to both summer and winter recreation.

The complete offer of the Balkana makes it a real tourist and recreational center, with opportunities for diverse activities and relaxation in an environment of untouched nature.

The prices in the restaurant are moderate for Croatian conditions, so I recommend that you taste something on offer, and then take a leisurely walk around the lake!
