Beer festival for the experienced! Zagreb is hosting the 12th Croatian Homebrew Championship!

Summer is just around the corner again – the days are getting longer, the asphalt is heating up, and we all know what that means. It’s time to properly quench your thirst with a cold, frothy, homemade beer! And no, we’re not talking about some bargain-bin industrial lager, but top-notch brews crafted in garages, basements, and the hearts of passionate homebrewers.

If beer to you is more than just a drink – more like a small religion – mark the date: Saturday, June 7, 2025. Because on that day, all the beer forces of the region will converge once again at Zmajska Pivovara in Zagreb for the 12th Croatian Homebrew Championship!

Organized by the Pivari Grada Zagreba association, this festival has long been a must-attend event for anyone who knows the difference between a stout and a porter, an IPA and a NEIPA – and has at least once said, “I could brew better than this.” And maybe you really could – because if you’re a homebrewer, there’s still time to enter your beer. And if you’ve completed BJCP training to become a beer judge, you’re also invited to join the judging panel!

This year’s festival brings over 80 homebrewed and craft beers to the taps – and yes, just like last year, tasting is unlimited! For snacks and something a bit more substantial, Pivnica Mlinarica has got you covered, while (of course!) Dr. Pigley returns with his signature cracklings. Note: food is not included in the ticket price.

Adding a dash of nostalgia, the organizers are bringing back Zagi, the legendary mascot of the 1987 Univerzijada. Just as Zagreb was once the heart of athletic spirit, on this day it becomes the epicenter of beer passion.

Entertainment? No worries! DJs, beer games, beer pong, chugging contests, and a quiz hosted by Šankatak will keep the energy high all day long.  

And then – the grand finale. The awards ceremony for the best homebrewers and the announcement of the Best of Show beer. Adrenaline, excitement, and that quiet hope that your brew will be crowned king of the day. And hey – maybe it will be!

Tickets are €25 in advance and €30 on the day of the festival – and that includes a tasting glass and a wristband granting you entry to beer heaven. Want even more? If you donate a keg of your brew, you get free entry, a festival T-shirt, and a meal. Pretty fair deal, right?
