The construction of Castel del Monte began in 1240 by order of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, who is also known as “Stupor Mundi” (Wonder of the World) because of his enlightenment, and interest in art, science, and architecture. The castle symbolized his power, but also his scientific passion, and it is assumed that it served as a hunting residence.

Although some historians believe it was intended as an intellectual retreat or even an observatory, the castle was never used for military purposes, nor was it attacked. It is interesting that it still has the original structure today.

Its octagonal shape, with eight towers at each corner and an octagonal courtyard in the center, reflects the harmony between geometry, astronomy, and symbolism. The rooms inside the castle are divided into two floors with a precise layout and are built from local limestone, marble, and coral, which adds an extra layer to its aesthetic. Every detail in the design has a purpose, from the position of the windows to the proportions of the rooms, which allow the play of light and shadow during the day.
