Does the draft kill?
“Does the draft kill?” – It is a vital question that has always been present in everyday conversations in these areas. Older generations often warned their descendants to avoid drafts, claiming that it was the cause of various health problems, including colds, sore throats, migraines, and even serious illnesses like pneumonia.
But when we look at scientific knowledge, it seems that this claim has no foundation. Experts say that the draft itself is not harmful and cannot cause serious diseases. Colds and infections are caused by viruses and bacteria, not airflow. Additionally, indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air, so occasionally opening windows to ventilate the space can be beneficial for health.

However, experts warn that direct exposure to cold drafts can worsen existing health problems such as muscle and joint pain, and cause discomfort. This is especially important for people with sensitive respiratory systems, such as those with asthma or allergies, who should avoid exposure to strong drafts.
As is often the case, beliefs have a strong influence on society, so the belief in the harmfulness of drafts is still widespread. People often believe what they heard from their parents and grandparents, without checking relevant sources or scientific knowledge.
