Fierza Lake is a powerful reservoir with a lot of tourist potential

Located on the Drin River, Albania’s largest river, the stunning Komani-like lake extends for 70 kilometers in a canyon from Fierza to Kukës. This artificial lake, made for the needs of a hydroelectric power plant, with its powerful flow, holds numerous untapped tourist potentials waiting for you to explore.

The beautiful landscape of Fierza Lake, spanning 7,000 hectares and filled with greenery, welcomes you as you drive along the hilly road border between Shkodër and Kukës counties towards Kosovo.

Connecting cities down the canyon, Fierza Lake is part of a reservoir created in 1978 by building one of the tallest dams in Albania and the region. With a height of 204 meters, the dam formed a lake with a depth of up to 128 meters, holding a volume of 2.7 to 3.2 billion cubic meters of water. Thanks to the Drin River, its turquoise waters, and dense forest, Fierza Lake features rich flora and fauna, serving as one of the largest fish cultivation centers in the country.

While the fish that once inhabited the Drin River no longer populate this lake, the Fierza reservoir’s fauna has been enriched with species like bream, carp, and crucian carp. This has, in turn, led to the proliferation of different mammals, including otters, which increased the growth of freshwater mussels.

These developments not only enhance the ecological diversity of the region but also create opportunities for tourists to explore areas like Kukës, Tropoja, Has, and Pukë while savoring delightful local delicacies along the way.

In addition to savoring delightful delicacies at the roadside restaurants, the settlements in the vicinity offer some of the most breathtaking views in all of Albania. Nature enthusiasts are sure to relish the experience. The region and canyon provide opportunities for activities such as horseback riding, cycling, swimming, hiking, and exploring numerous historical gems.

If you happen to be in the vicinity, be sure to explore this incredible and still untouched region, regardless of the season of the year.
