First a bit of history! Sućuraj has existed for more than 2,300 years and throughout its history has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The first known inhabitants of Sućuraj were the Illyrians, and their queen Teuta had her castle here in the 3rd century BC. In the 7th and 8th centuries, Sućuraj was settled by Croats, who live there to this day.
There are two ways to get to Sućuraj: by ferry from Split to Stari Grad and then 70 kilometers along a winding road, or by ferry from Drvenik directly to this charming and quiet place.

I came to the city in this first way, and I can tell you that it is really beautiful and colorful to drive across the entire island of Hvar. There are countless bays on both sides of the island and a fantastic view of Pelješac on one side and Biokovo on the other.
Here are five reasons why I think you should include Sućuraj in your vacation plan next year!
- Česminica Beach: The main beach in Sućuraj, popular for its beauty and cleanliness. Sandy and gravel, with a well-organized environment and infrastructure and excellent access. It’s a real candy. There are other beautiful beaches in the area.

- Sućuraj Lighthouse: Built-in 1874, this historical lighthouse offers a beautiful view of the sea and the island. You can walk to it along the beautiful promenade and enjoy the view of the mainland and Drvenik.

- Church of St. George and Monastery of St. Augustina: The remains of the Augustinian (now Franciscan) monastery from the 16th century are interesting for history enthusiasts and those who love cultural sights.

Fort St. George (Fortica): This Venetian fortress was built in 1613 by order of Captain Antonio Civran. It is also known why. After the Turks burned and looted Sućuraj three times, it was needed to protect the place and waterways. It’s not really in great condition now.

Mizarola tavern (Konoba Mizarola): You need something to eat while you rest in Sućuraj. You have a choice of several restaurants and pizzerias. I was very satisfied with the food and the moderate price at the Mizarola tavern, so I advise you to try something from their traditional offer. To ease your hunger, here’s what their meat platter and vegetarian pizza look like.
