Velenje, a city with a rich cultural and natural heritage, is located in central Slovenia, in the southwestern part of the province of Styria. It is located in a basin created by the Paka River, surrounded by the Ljubela and Paški Kozjak mountains.

Velenje was first mentioned in 1264, as a village under the medieval Šalek castle. In the 19th century, a coal mine was opened here, which stimulated the rapid development of the city after the Second World War.

• Velenje Underground – learn about mining stories in the Mining Museum of Slovenia and the tourist mining cave. Experience a unique dinner at a depth of 160 meters in the deepest underground dining room in Slovenia.

• Šalek Castle is the most important architectural monument in Velenje and beyond. It was built in the 12th century and abandoned in the 18th. Today, only the triangular defensive tower remains and is unique in Europe.
