From legionary camp to cultural heritage! This is the story of Burnum..

This summer, while we were circling the Dalmatian coast, the road also brought us to the Krka National Park. We explored the area’s diverse natural and cultural heritage, and not far from the famous Manojlovački waterfalls and the Brljan waterfall, we came across Burnum.

Located on the route Kistanje – Knin, near the village of Ivoševci, Burnum attracted us with its historical importance. This Roman archaeological site, a former camp and city of the Roman Legion, is a real gem for history buffs.

Burnum was founded at the beginning of the 1st century and was crucial for controlling the crossing over the Krka River, securing Roman interests on the border of the territories of the Liburni and Delmata, often conflicting tribes. Its size and organization made it something more than a military camp. It was also a kind of city, with camp settlements and local communities, forming an important social and military center.

During its history, Burnum was home to four legions, including the XI. legion Claudius Pia Fidelis, known for its loyalty to Emperor Claudius during the governor’s revolt in Dalmatia. Among the preserved structures, the most impressive is the amphitheater, the only such military facility in Croatia that could accommodate 6,000 and 10,000 spectators. Built in a natural depression, it symbolized the strength and significance of the Romans in this part of the world.

Today, in addition to the amphitheater, the remains of the military training ground and the arches of the basilica are visible from Burnum, which you can see even from the state road D59, while the rest is accessible with a ticket.
