Carnival is a period of joy and celebration traditionally celebrated before the start of Lent. These events, deeply rooted in the history and culture of different nations, are full of colorful parades, lavish costumes, and music. In the Adriatic region, Kurentovanje in Ptuj and Rijeka Carnival in Croatia stand out.

Kurentovanje is the largest and most important carnival event in Slovenia, with a tradition of more than 60 years. It is held in the city of Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian city, which is transformed into a large open ethnographic theater during the festival. The main characters are the Kurents, masked participants dressed in sheepskin with characteristic masks, who drive away evil spirits and summon spring by ringing bells. Their ritual processions are inscribed on UNESCO‘s representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

On the other hand, the Rijeka Carnival is one of the most famous carnivals in Europe, with a tradition that dates back to the 19th century. It takes place in the city of Rijeka, where during the “fifth season” the city is taken over by a cheerful and imaginative atmosphere. The highlight of the carnival is the International Carnival Parade, which brings together numerous masked groups, allegorical floats, and musical ensembles from all over the world. This event attracts thousands of visitors and is considered one of the most important events in the region.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
