From the production of cheese and chocolate to the camp! This is the fascinating story of Rajhenburg Castle

Slovenia is a country of castles, with more than 500 preserved historical forts, palaces, and estates. Each of them hides a unique story, historical mystery, or architectural gem. Among them, Rajhenburg Castle stands out, located on a hill above Brestanica, from whose walls there is a view of the Sava River valley.

This castle carries with it a rich, diverse, but also dark history, but still stands today as an unmissable destination that enchants lovers of history and culture.

Rajhenburg Castle was first mentioned between 1131 and 1147, and the oldest parts of the building belong to the Romanesque period. It was built under the authority of Salzburg Archbishop Konrad I, who used the castle as a fortress to protect his possessions. Over the centuries, the castle changed owners, and each family left its mark, from Gothic extensions to Renaissance alterations.

In 1881, the castle was bought by Trappist monks and turned into a monastery. The Trappists lived in almost complete silence, devoted to work and prayer. Known for their innovation, in castle, they started the production of the first chocolate in Slovenia called Imperial. Their chocolate gained such popularity that it became a favorite even at the court of Emperor Francis Joseph.

In addition to chocolate, the Trappists produced liqueurs and cheeses that enjoyed prestige throughout Europe. After them, today the type of cheese is called Trappist.

During the Second World War, in 1941, the castle was confiscated by the German occupation forces and turned into a camp for the deportation of Slovenians. After the war, in 1947, the Trappist order was dissolved, and the castle became state property. A year later, a Correctional Home for Women was established there, which lasted until the second half of the 20th century.

Today, the castle has been completely renovated and is open to the public as a cultural center. Its exhibitions include the history of the Trappist order, depictions of the deportation of Slovenians, and a rich collection of furniture and art. Of particular note is the collection of medals of Primož Kozmus, the Olympic winner from Brestanica, as well as the collection of old postcards that tell the story of the Posavje region.
