Harvesting in a winery located almost in the clouds!

Knebu Winery is truly something special and I was very happy to be invited to participate in their harvest this year. The winery is located at 900 meters above sea level next to Tomislavgrad, where until now I thought that only cattle breeding like cows, sheep, and horses could succeed…

But that’s no longer the case since Ivica Dilber and his Ruža decided to buy hectares of pasture where they planted varieties that do not belong to the Herzegovinian climate at all. Namely, traditional Herzegovinian varieties such as Žilavka and Blatina do not thrive at these altitudes, but that’s why there are Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Traminac, Pinot noir and Merlot.

A select group of people from all parts of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered together, and on that occasion, they also wore special T-shirts that were given to us by the hosts.

It is also interesting that each part of the vineyard is marked with a board on which the grape variety is written, as well as the name of that part of the vineyard, which bears the name of the owner from whom the land was purchased.

In Herzegovina, people have a hard time deciding to sell land, so the new owner decided to keep the memory of the old owner so that part of the vineyard was named after him. Great, isn’t it?

Then we all borrowed the vineyard shears and cheerfully started harvesting Chardonnay, and the owner of the winery showed us how to do it.

The work was soon interrupted by the rain, and the socializing and rejoicing continued in a tent not far from the future winery. The hosts treated us to prosciutto and cheese, steak tartare, and risotto made from local porcini mushrooms, and we washed everything down nicely with selected Knebu wines, of which I drank my favorite Sauvignon Blanc the most.

The hosts have seen all the possibilities of wine tourism, so in a year or two, when they finish building a new modern winery, you will be able to come here for tastings of really excellent Knebu wines or local food with a great view of the surroundings.

And finally, an explanation of why the wines are called Knebu. Of course, because they are located at an altitude that is really close to the sky and clouds! In this name, live and enjoy the magical wines of Knebu for a long time!
