National parks are protected areas that have been specially selected for their outstanding natural, cultural, or scientific value. Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has four national parks:
- Una National Park – Located in the northwest of the country, Una National Park hosts the beautiful waterfalls of the Una River, whose crystal clear water environment is home to numerous species of fish and birds. This area is also rich in cultural heritage, with numerous medieval forts and traditional country houses.
- Sutjeska National Park – This park, located in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosts incredible biodiversity. The most famous part of this park is Perućica, one of the last European rainforests, which is under the protection of UNESCO. Sutjeska National Park is also home to one of the deepest canyons in Europe.
- Kozara National Park – This park is located in the northwest of the country and is known for its forests, meadows, and rich wildlife. Kozara is a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities.
- Drina National Park – is the fourth national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the east of the country. It was founded in 2017 and covers an area of 6,315 ha. Its main natural values are the habitats of endemic and relict plant species, primarily Pančić’s spruce and the gorge-canyon valley of the Drina River and its tributaries.
All national parks play a key role in preserving the natural wealth of Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the incredible beauty of these areas.
They also promote eco-tourism and encourage awareness of the importance of nature conservation.
