It’s time for a trip! Planšarsko Lake is a peaceful oasis in the Slovenian Alps

Slovenia is known for its numerous lakes which amaze visitors with their diversity and beauty. In addition to the famous Bled and Bohinj lakes, there are other lesser-known, but equally fascinating lakes. For example, Cerknica Lake, the largest periodic lake in Europe, is known for its disappearance and reappearance depending on the season. Divje Lake near Idrija is impressive for its depth and emerald green color, while Planšarsko Lake is special for its unique heart shape.

Planšarsko Lake is located in Zgornje Jezersko, at an altitude of 896 meters. This artificial lake was created in the 1950s in memory of a large glacial lake that once existed in the area. The lake began to drain after an earthquake in 1348. Today, Planšarsko Lake is a symbol of Jezersko and a favorite excursion destination for many visitors.

Surrounded by the magnificent mountains of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, such as Kočna, Grintovac, Dolgi hrbat, Skuta, Rinki, and Baba, the lake offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Its surface area is about 2 hectares, and its greatest depth reaches 4 meters. The crystal clear water reflects the mountain peaks, creating beautiful scenes throughout the year.

Planšarsko Lake offers a variety of activities for visitors throughout the year. In the summer, it is popular for rowing and boating, while the well-maintained walkways around the lake are ideal for leisurely walks and relaxation in nature. Many visitors ask whether it is possible to swim in the lake. Although the water is exceptionally clean, swimming is not officially permitted in order to preserve the ecosystem and the peaceful atmosphere that prevails in this area. However, for those looking for refreshment, the proximity of mountain streams offers a natural alternative.

In the winter months, when the lake freezes over, visitors can enjoy ice skating. The area around the lake offers numerous hiking and cycling trails for those who enjoy an active holiday, and for those who crave gastronomic delights, there is the Gostišče ob jezeru by the lake. Here you can taste local specialties such as masunjek and sour milk, roast veal with buckwheat žganci, venison with bread dumplings, homemade kremšnita, and much more. The restaurant is currently closed for renovations until June 2025.

A visit to Planšarsko lake is especially magical in spring when nature awakens and the surrounding landscape is covered in fresh greenery and flowers. It is the ideal time to explore this gem, enjoy the peace and quiet, and soak up the beauty of untouched nature.
