Kneginečka Hiža: a blend of good food and tradition

On our very recent visit to Varaždin, a city on the banks of the Drava River, we were on the lookout for a restaurant that should be making headlines in every media across Croatia.  Of course, we could have chosen those popular ones located at the very center of this beautiful city or those owned by celebrities, but no, the Adria Fun team does things differently.

That’s why took a ride about 7 kilometers away from the center to a municipality called Gornji Kneginec to check out the restaurant called Kneginečka Hiža.

The first thing that impressed us the most was the restaurant’s outside area and terrace, and huge parking lot. The moment we got out of the car, our eyes were going everywhere. – “Wow, look at this”, – “No, no look at this”, – “Oh my God, this is so cute”.

Luckily, as we paid them a visit in the middle of the working week, and during earlier lunch hours, we managed to find a spot, but honestly, most of the tables on the outside terrace were already reserved so we would suggest that you do the same.

When the picture-taking session ended, and we got seated, it was time to check out the menu. Hmm.. what should we try on? Steak, pork loin, roast veal, meat platters, burgers, ribs, chicken.. everything sounds good when you are hungry… Let’s start first with a sip of pear rakija, and strawberry and honey liqueur. Cheers!

As the effects of rakija opened our appetite even more, the decision on what to eat was much easier and quicker. Two steaks in green pepper sauce, a Kneginička meat platter, baked chicken with vegetables in a clay pot, and two salads, please! For drinks, Schweppes, big sparkling water, and yellow muscat by Tomšić winery.

While waiting for our food to be done, we entered the main building of the restaurant. We wanted to see if the inside part of the restaurant was as equally charming as the outside one. And of course, it was. Decorated in the traditional way, the inner part is separated into two sections. The one on the ground floor is connected to the kitchen and the one on the first has a children’s playroom. How cool is that?

But that is not it! The toilets also left an impression. Female one especially! It was filled with every possible thing a woman might need, from all sorts of toiletries for hair, face, and body. They even had all kinds of hygienic products.

As we were wandering around, the time for the taste test arrived. And once again, for the 10th time already, Kneginečka Hiža left us speechless. All the food was very well made, and cooked with love. Just look at how good it looks!

Now let’s talk about prices. Drinks such as pear rakija, and strawberry and honey liqueur were from 2 – 2.8 euros, large sparkling water was 2.7, Schweppes was 2.4 euros, and yellow muscat by Tomšić (1l) was 16 euros, very similar to every restaurant we have been to so far. When it comes to food, a Kneginička meat platter for two was 30 euros, steak in green pepper sauce was 32 euros per portion, baked chicken with vegetables in a clay pot was 11 euros, and mixed salad was 3.6 euros. In total, a bill for 5 people was around 150 euros but keep in mind that we were not on a tight budget.

From all that we have seen, we are sure that even you, while reading this article, could tell that a lot of thought has been put into this place. The staff was also super friendly and the prices were pretty fair.  All in all, Kneginečka Hiža is Adria.fun approved.
