History & Culture

The story of Ljubljana Castle, also known as the “castle on the hill”,  takes us back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest forts in the country together with those built in Kamnik. Ruled by many noble families and fierce kings, to defend the city, it changed many times throughout history. At one point, in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was partially a prison as well, where among many, an Italian revolutionary Silvio Pellico, the Hungarian Prime Minister Lajos Batthyany, and the Slovene author Ivan Cankar were jailed. Later on, the additional cycle of adaptions was carried and a promenade Šance was added.

Today, besides its historical significance serves as a tourist attraction and event and wedding location.

Behind the walls of the castle, you will also find a museum, restaurants, winery, scriptorium, book vanishing points, wells, and even a Friderik souvenir shop. All of these can be accessed by a short walk up the hill on the Šance promenade or a cable car.

Restaurants, winery, and cafe

Of course, to make this magnificent castle even more attractive to the visitors, which would end up a day trip by itself, a gastronomic offer has been introduced. The castle, within its walls, has two restaurants, Strelec ( a Michelin star holder) and Gostilna Na Gradu (a Michelin Bib Gourmand holder) which offer high-quality food and the experience of mixing tradition and modern culinary. Additionally, you will find the castle café Grajska Kavarna Jezeršek serving you coffee, juices, snacks, and desserts. To round it all up, an offer of only Slovenian wines can be found at the Castle Wine Bar and Shop.
