Nature park Kopački rit

Kopački rit Nature Park is a floodplain in Baranja, in northeastern Croatia, between the rivers Danube in the east and Drava in the south. Its total size is 17,700 ha (177 km2), of which the Special Zoological Reserve covers 8,000 ha (80 km2).

 

Kopački rit swamp is home to thousands of biological species. A shelter for hundreds of bird species and is among the largest European wetlands. It is the largest breeding ground and hatchery of freshwater fish in the Danube region. Home to more than  2300 biological species.

In the Nature Park there is a very interesting piece of country architecture. It is the Tikveš Castle complex. The old Tikveš castle, the new castle with an annex, a chapel, and accompanying catering facilities are located within the forest and park. It was built by the Habsburgs in order to have luxurious moments of rest from the imperial hunt. Tikveš Castle is also known as Tito’s Castle.

 

 

Kopački rit is a place for rest, recreation, attraction and a world-famous place for bird watching. There are many entertainment options. You can go through the swamp in a tourist boat, or row in a canoe accompanied by expert guides. There is also a bicycle route, and a tourist train for a tour of land trails and tasting of local food and drinks.
