Once a favorite swimming spot and resort, today it is a quiet and hidden pearl of Papuk

From a young age, my family and I visited the Papuk Nature Park in all seasons. The memories of those trips still accompany me, and they are most vivid when I watch the recordings on old tapes that my father used to record. The sound of water flowing through the park, children’s laughter at the Jankovac picnic area and the tranquility of the lake near Novo Zvečevo create indelible memories.

I didn’t know much about the lake near Novo Zvečevo because I was born right after the Homeland War when it had already lost its former importance. However, since I was a child, I have heard stories about a discarded tank at the bottom of the lake and how we must not run outside the paths because there is a possibility of residual mines. Despite this, this peaceful lake was a favorite meeting place and swimming spot, especially for Končar workers and many other visitors.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to experience the former glory of Novo Zvečevo, but through the stories, I learned that this place used to be a real paradise for visitors. The resort, built in 1981, contained a hotel, restaurant, and cafe, and could accommodate up to 300 guests. In addition to the accommodation and gastronomic offer, visitors could then enjoy the football and basketball courts, fresh fish grown in the pools right next to the complex, and the magical lake.

This place was popular not only among domestic visitors but also tourists from all over Yugoslavia and abroad.

Sadly, only ruins remain of the former complex today. Abandoned and unsafe, it no longer attracts visitors as it once did, but the nature that surrounds it remains just as enchanting. The lake, although anxiously silent, still carries a special charm.

I visit it often and with pleasure, and I hope to pass on this love for this place to my children. Running on the embankment around the lake is a part of my childhood that I want to preserve for future generations.

I’m not sure if I prefer going there in the spring when the area is filled with chirping birds, or in the winter, when the fog descends over Zvečevo and the lake freezes. The snow-covered silence is broken only by the crunch of footsteps. For me, every season brings a special magic to this place.

As we approach winter, I wanted to share with you a place that could brighten up your next weekend. If you are not sure what to do on colder days, then definitely visit Novo Zvečevo and experience its past and present in just one visit. Walking along the lake, enjoy nature and silence, and along the way take the opportunity to go sledding or take a walk to the Jankovac mountain lodge.

Regardless of whether you choose to explore on foggy days or wait for the first snow, know that Papuk will provide an unforgettable experience

Once I saw that there was a bigger world out there, so I made myself be a part of it.
