The Adriatic Sea is not all that glitters, Mrežnica does so as well
From Slunj to Karlovac, the beauty that locals know as a place of real refreshment, peace and fun, and camping, hides in the dense vegetation of continental Croatia.
Mrežnica, whose 64-kilometer course leads through the karst area, is an impressive river that truly has something to offer at every kilometer.

The Mrežnica River rises in the Kordun region, not far from Slunj at 479 meters above sea level, and joins the Korana River, its companion, only near Karlovac. Although it is not big, this favorite among locals can boast of a beautiful valley 71 kilometers long, a canyon as long as 50 kilometers, 93 travertine barriers, more precisely waterfalls, green color, and greenery that surrounds it.
Its most famous waterfalls are: Roncevica waterfall, Milkovića waterfall, Jagodića waterfall, Rebića waterfall, Vitasov waterfall, Šušnjar waterfall, and Klarića waterfall, and of all 93 counted so far, six of them are higher than six meters.

Crooked, and full of rapids and waterfalls, the Mrežnica river has been inhabited since prehistoric times, both by Romans and Illyrians and later by Croats. Forts were built on it for defense purposes, as well as mills for both flour and energy production, and some of them are still used for tourist purposes.
Special both in summer, spring, and winter, the river Mrežnica provides a refuge for diverse flora and fauna. It is mostly inhabited by fish that like fast and cooler currents, such as trout, but it is not the only one.
As far as tourism is concerned, Mrežnica is best known for rafting, and along the river, you will also find a few campsites. However, the local population prefers it as the ultimate place to cool off, so you will find many who in some hidden place in the vegetation will enjoy sunbathing and swimming in peace for hours.
Some of the most famous places for camping are Camp Slapić, Robinson’s Camps Leskar, and Green River, and for a great one-day trip, there are the excursion sites Otok ljubavi and Mrežnička kuća.
To complete your experience, there are interesting festivals such as the Magma Festival or the Bear Stone Festival held on Mrežnica.
