The magical Bereg waterfall is hidden just 70 kilometers from Sarajevo!

If there is something Bosnia and Herzegovina can boast about, it is the fact that water flows everywhere, as many rivers as there are miracles. You will truly find waterfalls on every corner, from east to west and from north to south. Some of them are very famous, especially among tourists, and locals hide some of them.

One such hidden gem is located about 70 kilometers east of Sarajevo, near the municipalities of Sokolac and Rogatica.

The Bereg River, whose famous Bereg spring (bos. Bereško Vrelo) is located in the village of the same name, flows into the Sušica River from a five-meter-wide opening. In addition to the well-supplied surrounding villages, its cold and clean water, rich in trout, then travels towards the Rakitnica river, where it creates the Bereg waterfall, located in the forest-covered villages, 8 kilometers north of Rogatica.

This 12-meter-high waterfall is considered one of the most beautiful in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is created when the water of the Bereg River overflows over the mystical travertine barriers, creating a small lake as deep as 2 meters.

Surrounded by greenery, the Bereg waterfall, which takes on a turquoise color, is a real little treasure of this region, reminiscent of some of the more popular waterfalls such as the one near Ljubuški.

As always, the best time to visit it is in the spring, when the surroundings are illuminated by greenery, and the flow of the Bereg River strengthens after the rains and the melting of the snow. It’s not a bad idea to visit it in autumn either, because that allows you to experience it in completely different colors.

The great thing about this waterfall is that it is still a big secret, so if you head towards it soon, know that you might not meet anyone. Nothing better, right?
