Tuna on Biševo’s seafoam
After publishing the article about a trip to the island of Biševo, I received a few messages asking about the best place to eat tuna. Although there are not many restaurants on the island, I had promised to include in that same piece a story about the only proper spot for that, the restaurant tucked away in Porat Bay.
It is called “Kod Jakše” and is located right on the sandy beach. At first glance, it looks more like a casual beach bar than a serious dining destination, but perhaps that is where its magic lies, in that deceptive simplicity.

There is another restaurant in Porat, and after a round of swimming, I first headed there. I had already visited “Kod Jakše” a few years ago, so I wanted to try something new and give the other place a fair chance. But when I asked the waiter a simple question, “What do you have on the menu?” his answer completely threw me off. “Nothing anymore.”
Shock. It was lunchtime, the sun was blazing, and the restaurant had no food. I thought to myself, how is that even possible? Nothing at all?

But hunger does not wait, so I quickly turned around and rushed back to Jakše’s, hoping to grab a table in time. You never know, maybe they were also running low or nearly out. When I asked the waitress, “Please tell me you have something to eat,” her response delighted me.
“We came prepared.” – At that moment, all worries disappeared.
We quickly sat down, and with just a glance at the menu, we knew there was no better choice than the tuna steak with a potato and green bean salad. I mean, we were not going to order a hamburger on a trip like this. The waitress helped confirm our choice with a smile, telling us the steak could not be any fresher.
After only twenty minutes, our table welcomed a bottle of Biševo’s own Plavac Mali, or “Plovac” as the locals call it, and four of the most tender, fragrant, and irresistible tuna steaks I have ever tasted. Perfectly seasoned, with a view of the beach and the open sea, we all found ourselves drifting through the Adriatic in our minds, discovering its magic.
No Michelin restaurant can offer you this.

You know that feeling when you are so hungry from swimming, but you still eat slowly to enjoy the moment longer? Because once it is over, you know you can only experience it again by returning to Porat. That exact feeling still lingers in me, and I know I will follow it again the next time I find myself heading to the island of Vis, or more precisely, Biševo.
The tuna steak, along with the potato and green bean salad you can see in the photo, was more than enough. In short, the price per portion was fair, 32 euros if I remember correctly, and even the wine was not particularly expensive.
All in all, it was worth every cent, even if it had cost twice as much. As far as we are concerned, the restaurant “Kod Jakše” deserves nothing but praise.
