With a maximum depth of 4.5 meters, it remains relatively shallow, and water reaches the lake only through precipitation and melting snow from the picturesque mountains surrounding it.

During hot summers, the lake experiences a significant water loss through evaporation which leads to further reduction in its depth and size.

Two theories exist regarding the origin of Blidinje Lake. The first proposes that the lake formed during the Ice Age and holds the distinction of being the largest natural mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the second theory presents a different perspective.

Recent research suggests that while there are glacial indicators around Lake Blidinje, its creation can be attributed to human activity approximately 147 years ago.

Despite this revelation, the lake retains its status as a geomorphological natural monument, serving as the namesake for the Blidinje Nature Park.
