Albania: The land of great lakes

Albania is home to the three largest lakes in the Adria region and shares all three with other countries. These are Skadar, Ohrid, and Prespa lake.

Lake Skadar: A natural paradise

Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, is located in the north of Albania, on the border with Montenegro. With 391 km², of which 147.9 km² belongs to Albania, this lake is home to numerous species of birds and fish, making it an ideal place for nature lovers and ornithologists.

Lake Skadar is home to as many as 281 species of birds, which represents about 50% of the total number of European species, and is one of the richest wetlands in Europe.

Mixed colonies of pelicans, cormorants, terns, herons, and other bird species can be found in the almost wild wetlands of Lake Skadar. The lake is rich in rare fish, and there is an abundance of plants in the water.

Lake Ohrid: The deepest lake in the Balkans

Lake Ohrid is located in the east of Albania, on the border with North Macedonia. This lake covers an area of 358.2 km², of which 118.9 km² belongs to Albania.

Lake Ohrid is one of the deepest and oldest lakes in the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288 meters and an average depth of 155 meters.

Its crystal clear water and rich underwater world make it a popular destination for divers.

Lake Prespa: the triple border of nature

Lake Prespa, located on the triple border of Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia, covers an area of 274 km², of which 49.4 km² belongs to Albania.

This lake is known for its exceptional biological diversity and beautiful landscapes. The greatest depth of the lake is 54 meters.
