Bashtovë Fortress is another impressive piece of Albania’s rich history!

On several occasions, we have guided you through various historical and cultural examples of Albania. There are indeed many of them, some are more popular because they are located in somewhat larger cultural centers, and some, like this lesser-known one that is awaiting inclusion on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, are hidden only about 30 kilometers from Durrës in the very delta of the river Shkumbin.

This unique example is the Bashtova fortress (alb. Kalaja e Bashtovës) in the settlement of the same name next to the river itself and at the very gates of the Divjaka-Karavasta National Park, which we have already written about on several occasions.

It dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically the 15th century when Albania was ruled by the Venetian Republic and played an important role in the area’s history. However, it is not as well known as some other historical places.

Its strategic location on the famous Via Egnatia route served to control trade routes and protect Venetian possessions.
