Bobovac: the royal city where the crown of Bosnia was kept
Bosnia and Herzegovina hides many secrets from its rich history, including its royal cities, the centers of power of the medieval Bosnian state. While many tourists visit BiH to explore famous places like Sarajevo and Mostar, few know that in the mountains around Vareš, there used to be the royal city of Bobovac, from which the Bosnian kings ruled the country.

Located on a high hill, Bobovac is located in the municipality of Vareš, not far from the present-day town of Kraljeva Sutjeska. Built-in the 14th century, Bobovac was one of the largest fortifications in medieval Bosnia and served as the administrative and military center of the Bosnian kings. Its strategic position, surrounded by mountains, provided a natural defense against enemies, and the fortifications and walls that surrounded it additionally ensured the safety of the ruler and the royal family.
The history of Bobovac is closely related to the Kotromanić dynasty, especially to the kings Stjepan Ostoj, Tvrtko II. Kotromanić and Stjepan Tomašević, who used this fortress as their capital and are buried in the royal burial chapel itself. Bobovac was the center of political power, but also the place where royal jewels and crowns were kept.

Unfortunately, like many other medieval towns, Bobovac experienced its decline. During the Ottoman conquests in 1463, the city fell into the hands of the Turks. The loss of Bobovac was a turning point for the Bosnian kingdom because, with its conquest, the last great fortress of the Bosnian kings also disappeared. However, even today, the remains of Bobovac stand as a reminder of the glorious past and the struggle to preserve Bosnian statehood.
The most important event in the history of this city is the betrayal of Stjepan Tomašević, when Duke Radak, together with Bobovec, handed him over to Sultan Mehmed after the failed conquest of this royal city. The Sultan promised him status and wealth. King Stjepan Tomašević then hid in the Ključ fortress and was then killed in Jajce.

Today, the ruins of Bobovac attract history lovers, archaeologists, and all those who want to feel the spirit of the past. Walking through this site is like traveling back to medieval Bosnia, feeling the winds that blew around the walls, and looking towards the valleys that were once under the watchful eye of the Bosnian rulers. It is particularly interesting that every year in October, the “walk to Bobovac” is held, an event that gathers numerous visitors, including high state and church representatives, in memory of the medieval Bosnian state.
If you are interested in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bobovac is a destination you must visit. This is not just the site of the old walls, but a location that tells the story of the Bosnian struggle for independence and honor. Dare to explore this royal city, discover hidden corners, and remember the power of a long-lost but never-forgotten state.
