The most beautiful view of Mostar is from the Fortica!

Every visit to Mostar means discovering something new and exciting. Observing the surrounding mountains from the hotel, it is difficult not to look up at Fortica, that foothill of the significantly higher Velež mountain, which towers over the city and the Neretva River. I couldn’t resist either, so I went to that peak.

A winding road leads from the center of Mostar, so the picnic area on the top of the hill can be easily reached in about twenty minutes. The weather was a bit windy but on a hot summer day, it was an ideal time to visit.

At the end of the 19th century, Austria-Hungary built the Fortica fortress and some others on this hill. Since then, the hill has been called Fortica.

For Austria-Hungary, the fort served as a barracks, a warehouse, and sometimes a prison. Now it is still a ruin that I advise you not to enter, but to observe it from the outside.

A renovated mountain lodge, a former Italian bunker, is located at the very top of Fortica at 510 meters above sea level. From here there is a wonderful and unforgettable view of Mostar and most of the mountains of Herzegovina.

Around the mountain lodge there are nice benches to sit and enjoy the view, and whoever wants can have something to drink or eat.

For those who like adrenaline, there is also a free sky walk promenade, which is really rare, so definitely go there because you will get a new dimension of visiting this popular picnic area, which was visited by people even in our time. The sky walkway with a glass floor is 35 meters long.

If you didn’t have enough adrenaline, you can go on a 1,000-meter-long zip line, which connects Fortica with the nearby Stolac hill at a height of 100 meters.

Mostar had the most fortified buildings in Austro-Hungarian Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the next article, I will describe to you what it looks like on Merdžan glavi.
