Jankovac is among the favorite destinations of the inhabitants of continental Croatia, especially in winter!
After exploring the lake in Novo Zvečevo and visiting the first Croatian geological natural monument, we continued our journey towards the picnic/excursion area, located in the heart of the Papuk Nature Park. At an altitude of 475 meters above sea level, this mountain beauty turns into a real fairytale destination during the winter months, and it is one of my favorites.
For as long as I can remember, there has been that one VCR recording of my first visit to this spot, way back in 1997, when I was maybe only one and a half years old. I watched that video at least 1,000 times, and every time, it reminded me that Jankovac is my favorite destination in all seasons, especially in winter.

Why in winter? Well, the road that leads to the excursion area truly becomes a real fairy tale. Especially since in the last couple of years, most of continental Croatia has had very little snow, so as soon as we hear that the first snowflakes have arrived in the heights, we hurry to either Medvednica, the Samobor Mountains, or in my case, if you grew up further east, then towards Papuk.
Of course, the crowds, especially on weekends and with the first snow, can be so big, so be prepared that you will probably only be able to park along the road, even up to a kilometer away from the entrance. But nothing is difficult when you know that the whole way to Jankovac leads through snow-covered forests that create scenes worthy of postcards.

The closer you are to the resort itself, the more you will hear children eagerly running to the slopes so they can go sledding, while adults enjoy walking along the well-maintained trails that lead to the frozen waterfall, spring, and around the lake.
Mountain lodge Jankovac, located in the center of the excursion area, provides a real refuge from the cold. In its warm ambiance, visitors can warm themselves with hot drinks and traditional Slavonian dishes, and so we, too, were very happy to drink a few drinks and enjoy the view from the window.

A special experience is provided by the frozen waterfall Skakavac, whose ice formations flow in shades of blue and white. And even the lakes can’t complain, here and there the occasional duck comes across, trying to grab a meal in parts that are not frozen.
Fresh air and untouched nature make every stay outdoors a special experience. The snow cover turns the forest into a quiet, almost mystical place, where every step is heard as a crunch underfoot.

If you are looking for a place to feel a real winter idyll, far from the hustle and bustle of the city and everyday worries, then a visit to Jankovac during these months is the right place for that and for the whole family. I recommend that you check the condition of the road on the official Facebook profile of the Papuk Nature Park before you leave because sometimes snow can indeed surprise you in the morning!
