KLUŽE – A FORTRESS THAT DEFIES TIME

At the very entrance to a narrow canyon stands the Kluže Fortress. Originally built as a wooden fortress in 1472 to protect Carinthia from Turkish incursions, it has been expanded and transformed over the centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars, French artillery destroyed the original stone structure in the battles of 1797. However, at the end of the 19th century, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy decided to rebuild a strong fortress, this time resistant and powerful.

Today’s Kluže Fortress is an impressive rectangular stone structure with thick walls and narrow corridors leading to the crew quarters, ammunition depots, loopholes, and cannon positions. Due to its position and strong walls, it represented an almost impregnable obstacle to any invader.

FORT HERMANN – THE UPPER GUARDIAN OF THE VALLEY

High above the Kluže fortress, on the steep slopes of Mount Rombon, stands Fort Hermann. Built between 1897 and 1900 and conceived as an additional defensive position that would prevent enemies from taking higher positions. Fort Hermann was a modernly equipped defensive facility, but unlike Kluža, it was located in a more vulnerable position.

During the First World War, it was Fort Hermann that suffered the most damage. It was heavily bombarded by Italian artillery, causing great destruction. After the war, it was abandoned and left to decay. Today, its massive stone ruins tell the stories of the dramatic events that shaped the fate of the Koritnica Canyon.

EXPLORE TWO FORTS IN ONE!

Today, Kluže Fortress has become an interesting museum and cultural center that regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances. Here you will learn about the life of soldiers, warfare strategies, and the rich history of this region. After exploring the museum exhibits, we suggest a short but meaningful adventure to Fort Hermann – the ruined upper fort, which is reached by a marked hiking trail. The path begins right behind the fortress and includes a 100-meter-long illuminated tunnel, and then a climb through the forest to the magnificent remains of the former bastion. The view from above of the Koritnica Valley and the surrounding peaks, as well as the atmosphere of silence among the ruins, is a real reward for every step.

Kluže Fortress is just a few minutes’ drive from Bovec and is easily accessible by car. It is open to visitors from June to September, every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while group visits can be arranged by appointment during the off-season. There is an entrance fee – adults pay 5 euros, students and pensioners 3 euros, and families can take advantage of a cheaper ticket of 12 euros. Visiting Fort Hermann is free, but due to the terrain, sturdy shoes and a flashlight are recommended.
