Kozlov rob, known under the names Tolmin Town and Tolmin Castle, are the remains of the most important fort in the Tolmin area. First mentioned in the 12th century, this castle once belonged to the powerful feudal lords, the patriarchs of Aquileia, the counts of Gorica, the Cividals, the Venetians, and finally the Habsburgs.

Built to monitor the important passage of the Tolmin region, the Kozlov rob was always guarded by a noble family assigned by the governor of the land.

Over the centuries, various changes and upgrades were made to it, both with a change of owners and due to two earthquakes that struck it in 1348 and 1511.

At the beginning of the 17th century, when the Kozlov rob was taken over by the Coroninis, the castle was abandoned. Then a new one was built in the center of the city of Tolmin, which today houses the Tolmin museum.

For several centuries it had no purpose, until the First World War when the ruins of the castle served as an observation post for the defense of the so-called Tolmin bridgehead.

Having received the status of a cultural monument, the remains of the castle were restored and arranged as a viewpoint from which one of the most beautiful views in all of Slovenia can be seen.

The castle can only be reached on foot, which is why it has become a favorite trail among recreationists and nature lovers.

If the road takes you to Tolmin, be sure to take a walk to the top, arm yourself with a nice sandwich and drink, and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

It’s also a great place for a picnic or maybe a paragliding adventure!
