Krn lake is the largest Slovenian high-mountain lake! It amazes visitors with its beauty
Slovenia is world famous for its natural gems hidden in every corner. Wherever you turn you will find something that will draw you back to her again. This also applies to lake Krn.
Located in the southwest of the Triglav National Park, not far from Kobarid, in the heart of the Krn mountain after which it got its name, under the glaciers on impermeable reddish limestones and at an altitude of 1,391 meters, Krn lake, the largest high-altitude lake in Slovenia, is tucked away.

Around 380 meters long and 150 meters wide, lake Krn receives its water through broken rock fragments and torrents from Mount Polje. Its depth is not constant, and in some places, it stretches from 8 to 16 meters.
Surrounded by cliffs, evergreen forest, and mountain grasslands, this lake is an excellent place for the development of diverse flora and fauna, so here you will find over 40 species of aquatic plants, 24 species of small animals, and some of the endangered species such as yellow-flowered poppy, white cotton grass, and narrow-leaved aconite.
The lake is artificially populated with fish, which, together with bathers, pollute it heavily. That is exactly why swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited.

The lake can be reached from two directions, the one near Kobarid from the village of Krn, which is located at the foot of the mountain and above the valley of waterfalls under Vrsno, and from the village of Lepena near the mountain hut Dr. Klement Jug. According to information from various mountaineers, this particular path from Lepena to Krn lake is suitable for all ages, it is not difficult, and it is about 7 kilometers long in one direction.
Of course, everything depends on the time of year you plan to visit it, the best conditions are, of course, those in the summer months.

In winter, the lake has a completely different charm. Although it is a little more difficult to reach in the winter months, due to the large amount of snow, and appropriate equipment is recommended, its white mantle makes it a magical place. Krn lake is known to freeze completely during the winter.

Because of its beautiful green water, the reflection of the mountains and nature, the silence, and the occasional breeze, this lake will surely become one of your favorite places to visit. It is a real little paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers.
In the vicinity of the mountain hut, there is Dupeljsko Lake.
