Otočec Castle: A fairytale destination on the Krka River island

Did you know that in the heart of the Dolenjska region, only 9 kilometers from Novo Mesto, is the Otočec castle – a place that seems to be from a fairy tale? With its unique location, situated on an island in the middle of the Krka River, Otočac is the only such castle in Slovenia, and right here its visitors can experience historical architecture and a wonderful atmosphere.

The first written mention of the Otočec castle dates back to 1252 when it served as a defense fortress along the Krka River. Over the centuries, the castle was inhabited by various noble families, including the Villanders and the famous Lenković family, of which Nikola IV Zrinski was a member. Thanks to its strategic position on the river, the castle played a key role in protecting this area.

Over the centuries, the castle has undergone many modifications and adaptations, from Gothic style to Renaissance and Baroque elements. However, although it was heavily damaged during the Second World War, it was returned to its original state through thorough restoration, which preserved numerous architectural and historical features.

In addition to its architecture, the castle is also known for its surrounding landscape. Its main feature is the river Krka, which envelops the island in its emerald green color, and its bridge, which further emphasizes its isolation. To make it even more attractive, in the 18th century, it got its own palace park, which today hides rare species of trees and plants, as well as breathtaking scenes.
