It is believed that its history dates back to ancient times, but also that it was founded, as legend says, by Hercules after his return from the war. During the Roman period, Tropea was an important strategic point due to its position overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. A little later, during the Middle Ages, the village became an important center of trade and culture under the rule of the Normans, the Aragonese, and other rulers who left their mark on its architecture.

Today, however, it is the center of enjoyment at every turn.

Following the rich history of this place, it is natural to ask what all Tropea has to offer its visitors today. Its main attractions perfectly reflect the combination of past times and natural beauty, and these are some that you definitely have to explore.

  • Santa Maria dell’Isola:  One of the most famous landmarks of Tropea is the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which is located on top of a rock above the sea. This medieval church was once a Benedictine abbey, and today it is the symbol of the village. It offers visitors not only a spiritual experience but also a spectacular view of the sea and the countryside.
  • Old Town (Centro Storico): The maze of narrow, cobbled streets in the old part of Tropea is ideal for exploring. Here you will find beautiful historic palaces, local shops and restaurants serving traditional Calabrian dishes such as red onion pasta.
  • Tropea Beach (Spiaggia di Tropea): Tropea is famous for its crystal clear beaches that stretch along the foot of the cliff. Spiaggia di Tropea has been repeatedly named one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, thanks to its white sand, turquoise sea and unique cliff backdrop.
  • Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Romania:  Built in the 12th century, the cathedral is another important landmark of Tropea. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the village, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Romania, whose image is kept inside the church. The interior exudes a medieval atmosphere, and visitors can see beautiful frescoes and valuable historical artifacts.

In addition to history and natural beauty, Tropea offers an authentic Italian experience away from the crowds of big villages. It is an ideal place to relax, taste local specialties, and enjoy the slow rhythm of Mediterranean life. Thanks to its untouched beauty, Tropea won the title “Borgo dei Borghi” – the most beautiful village in Italy in 2021.

Seems interesting, doesn’t it?
