It is believed that its history dates back to ancient times, but also that it was founded, as legend says, by Hercules after his return from the war. During the Roman period, Tropea was an important strategic point due to its position overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. A little later, during the Middle Ages, the village became an important center of trade and culture under the rule of the Normans, the Aragonese, and other rulers who left their mark on its architecture.

• Santa Maria dell’Isola:  One of the most famous landmarks of Tropea is the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which is located on top of a rock above the sea. This medieval church was once a Benedictine abbey, and today it is the symbol of the village. It offers visitors not only a spiritual experience but also a spectacular view of the sea and the countryside.

• Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Romania:  Built in the 12th century, the cathedral is another important landmark of Tropea. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the village, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Romania, whose image is kept inside the church. The interior exudes a medieval atmosphere, and visitors can see beautiful frescoes and valuable historical artifacts.
