The construction of the arena began during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD and was completed under Emperor Vespasian. It was used for gladiatorial fights and other public spectacles, such as animal battles, and theatrical performances. It had a seating capacity of around 23,000 spectators and was divided into different sections based on social class.
The amphitheater is elliptical in shape and is built from local limestone. It is 133 meters long and 105 meters wide, and about 32 meters tall.
