St. Michael fortress has the most unforgettable view of Zadar and its archipelago
The St. Michael Fort (265 m/sl), located on the hill of the same name northwest of the town of Preko on the island of Ugljan, is a historical jewel that fascinates with its rich past and incredible views. The island of Ugljan is located right across from Zadar, accessible by boat and ferry lines in just a 20-minute’ ride.
The first known information about the fortress is related to the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael from the end of the 11th or the first half of the 12th century. The monastery was originally a branch of the Zadar Benedictine monastery of St. Krševan, and over time it became independent.

The fortress was built by the Venetians in 1202 after the conquest and destruction of Zadar. Throughout history, the fortress played a very important role, especially during the Venetian siege of the city of Zadar in 1345 and 1346.
St. Michael Fortress is a favorite excursion spot for the islanders, people from Zadar, and many tourists. What is amazing about this place is the nature and the 360-degree views in all directions.

From this position, you can see Zadar, and to the south and west, you can see the many islands of the Zadar archipelago and parts of the Kornati National Park in the distance.
