Pirate’s cave (alb. Shpella e piratëve) is located just two bays from the beautiful Dhermi beach, in the high rocks above the village of Iljas and the monastery of Saint Theodore, which has one of the most stunning views on the Albanian Riviera. It is about 20 meters high and consists of two large halls that are only 40 meters deep.

The cave also has an opening on the upper side, so with the combination of the crystalline Ionian Sea and the sun, the rocks that surround it take on a pink color.

It got its name, of course, from the belief that various pirates hid in it, where they also hid their treasures after robberies. This is also indicated by the remains of flames as if something was burning in the cave.

The Pirate’s Cave also caught the eye of the famous Albanian writer, Petro Marko, who wrote a book of the same name about this cave, and his story was later made into a film.

As Petro Marko himself was born in Dhermi, the story begins precisely in this small village. The book and the film follow a group of curious children who find out about the existence of a cave nearby and embark on an adventure.

Wanting to be the first to visit the Pirate’s Cave, they ask the fisherman Niko Dabo to help them build a boat to reach the cave. Of course, he decided to help them, which gave these curious children the opportunity to explore it.

After spending hours researching the history of the cave, the children realize that their boat has disappeared. But these little adventurers quickly found a solution. They lit a big fire, which attracted the attention of locals from a nearby village who came and rescued them.

If you also want to explore the Pirate’s Cave like these little explorers, know that it is also possible and only by boat. On the main beach in Dhermi, you will find many boat owners who have it on their tour schedule during the summer months.

It will take you about 15 minutes to arrive, make sure your boat doesn’t run away too!
