Velenje Castle: Renaissance beauty with a view of the Šaleška Valley
If your path takes you to the Šaleška Valley, above the town of Velenje you will be greeted by Velenje Castle – one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Slovenia. Its white facades and red roofs dominate the landscape, but the real magic lies behind its walls. Here, history is not just written in books – it lives in every stone, every view from the ramparts, every whisper lost in the centuries-old corridors.

FROM MEDIEVAL FORTRESS TO RENAISSANCE RESIDENCE
The first written records of Velenje Castle date back to 1270, when it was owned by the noble Kunšperk family. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands many times – from the Ptuj, Liechtenstein, and Wagen von Wagensberg families, to von Sauer and Adamovich de Csepin. It was during the time of the Wagen family, in the 16th century, that the castle was renovated in the spirit of the Renaissance and acquired its current appearance. Baltazar Wagen, one of the family’s prominent members, supported the Protestant Reformation, which also influenced the spiritual and cultural identity of the castle itself.
In the 19th century, it was managed by the noble Adamovich family, and then by the Coronini von Cronberg, who used it as a summer residence until 1943. During and after World War II, the castle was nationalized, and for a time it was inhabited by miners and their families. This period led to the deterioration of the interior, but thanks to the local community and the enthusiasm of historians and cultural figures, in 1957 the castle was renovated and converted into the Velenje Museum.

GUARDIAN OF A RICH HERITAGE
Today, the Velenje Museum offers eleven permanent exhibitions that reveal the rich history of the region, as well as stories from distant lands. Particularly impressive is the African collection of sculptor František Foit – a rarity not only in Slovenia but also beyond, which includes hundreds of sculptures, masks, and musical instruments. In the castle, you can also see a reconstruction of a 1930s inn, as well as a shop from that time, which provides a special experience of everyday life in the last century. The remains of mastodons found in the Šaleška Valley are also on display, testifying to the much older past of this region.
The museum also organizes a variety of cultural programs, from concerts under the stars and exhibitions of contemporary art to workshops and guided tours that breathe new life into the castle. The castle is not only a museum – it is also increasingly a venue for weddings, receptions, and business events, which shows how carefully the balance between preserving tradition and opening up to modernity is nurtured.
