Why is Lake Como one of the most famous destinations in Italy?

Is there a place where the elegance of Italian architecture meets the wildness of the Alpine peaks, where history whispers through the cobblestone streets, and every view looks like a frame from a movie? There is – and it’s called Como.

Tucked away in northern Italy, right next to the Swiss border and under the watchful eye of the recognizable Alpine peaks, Lake Como has attracted artists, aristocrats, travel writers, and dreamers for centuries. Its distinctive shape, resembling the letter Y inverted, is not only a geographical curiosity but also the heart of a region adorned with a combination of natural splendor and the human hand created here with incredible taste.

But why has this lake, among so many in Italy, acquired the status of one of the most famous and desirable destinations in the country?

BELLAGIO, VARENNA, COMO – LUXURY IN STONE

The answer, perhaps, begins in Bellagio. Located at the very point where the lake branches, this town is nicknamed the “pearl of Como” for a reason. With its narrow streets that descend like waterfalls to the water and villas that remind of some bygone, almost unreal times, Bellagio is a place where time loses its sharpness and the days become picture books.

On the opposite shore, Varenna awaits – quieter, more restrained, but no less enchanting. Its pastel facades and peaceful lakeside promenade create a different, more intimate feeling. There is also Menaggio, perfect for those looking for a touch of tradition with a coffee on the waterfront, and of course, the city of Como itself, elegant and lively, with its cathedral and the unmissable markets that smell of cheese, wine, and lemons.

VILLAS THAT TELL STORIES

But what sets Como apart from all the other lakes in the world is not just the cities and nature, but the villas. Not as luxury properties, but as witnesses of eras. Villa del Balbianello, situated on a promontory that juts out into the lake like a clockwork, is breathtaking. It’s no wonder that scenes from Star Wars and James Bond were filmed here.

Villa Carlotta, on the other hand, is not just a residence but also a garden fairy tale. Its botanical gardens change their face depending on the season, from the blossoming camellias in early spring to the splendor of azaleas and rhododendrons in early summer.

WHERE NATURE IS THE KEY

Although the villas and boats may initially captivate you, it’s only when you step onto the forest paths above the lake or watch the mountains reflected in the calm water that you realize: that nature is the master artist here.

Wooded hills and alpine peaks rise above the lake, and every step up brings a new perspective. The La Via dei Monti Lariani trail is not just for hikers – it’s a historical artery that connects villages, past and present. The views from it fall towards the lake as if you were looking at a dream landscape: a ship leaving a trace, a village huddled against the shore, a garden sprouting from the rock.

Then there’s Monte Grona, one of the peaks above Menaggio, which offers a panorama so wide that you can see Como, Lugano, and Maggiore at the same time. Or Orrido di Bellano, a dramatic gorge through which water roars – a place that nature didn’t create for tourists, but which tourists don’t miss today.

A HERITAGE THAT LASTS FOR CENTURIES

Lake Como has a soul that is not only made up of villas, but also of monasteries, churches, castles, and museums. The city of Como, for example, has a cathedral that was built over three centuries, from Gothic to Renaissance, and not just to be beautiful, but to bear witness to the time when the city was a powerful trading power.

This cathedral is called the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), also known as the Duomo di Como. Its white marble facade and elegant dome rise above the city center as a silent ode to the centuries in which art was patiently built, from generation to generation.

In Lezzeno, right on the shore, there is a row of old fishermen’s houses that tell the story of a time when the lake was a source of life, not luxury. There is also the Museo Barca Lariana in Pianello – a unique museum dedicated to the history of boats on the lake, with a collection that reveals how people here lived with the water for centuries.

And let’s not forget – the Via Regina, an ancient road used by the Romans, which today connects villages along the west coast. Walking along this road is not just a walk, but a journey through time.

TASTE, SMELL, AND DINNERS BY THE LAKE

Como also has its own gastronomic language. And while shrimp and truffles are perhaps more often associated with southern Italy, what comes from the mountains and the lake dominates here: pizzoccheri – homemade buckwheat pasta, paired with melted cheese and Swiss chard, and trout, prepared simply, with a drop of olive oil and lemon.

And the wine? Light, fruity, locally made for long evenings on the terrace, while the last rays of the sun glide along the surface of the water.

AND THEN – WHY COMO?

Because Como is more than a lake. It is a theater of nature and human creation. A place where all the best of Italy is gathered in one frame: elegance, history, landscape, romance. And because, once you sit by its shore, quietly listening to the gliding of a boat on the water, you realize that the beauty here is not just aesthetic – it is experiential.
