What is Veliki Tabor hiding? Is it worth exploring?

According to tradition, Veronika was a young girl from Zagorje with whom Fridrik Celjski, son of the mighty Herman II Celjski, fell in love. Their love was not approved by Fridrik’s father, who accused Veronika of witchcraft. Although she was acquitted in court, Herman ordered her execution. The story says that Veronika was drowned in Veliki Tabor, and her body was buried in the walls of the castle.

Even today, stories of the sobs of the unhappy Veronika can be heard in the castle, which is why many believe that her spirit is still present. That tragic love story is one of the strongest links between Veliki Tabor and the cultural heritage of Hrvatski Zagorje.
