Have you heard of Andrićgrad? Part of the city of Višegrad has become a real cultural center

Andrićgrad, also known as Kamengrad, is a tourist, cultural, administrative, and educational complex in Višegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on a peninsula between the rivers Drina and Rzava, about 300 meters from the famous Visegrad bridge, the Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge, which is under UNESCO protection.

Inspired by the works of Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, especially his famous novel The Bridge on the Drina, this place depicts the history of Višegrad through the prism of the symbolism of the bridge as a meeting place of different cultures and historical turmoil.

The original creator of Andrićgrad is the famous film director Emir Kusturica, who wanted to create a medieval stone town inspired by the works and characters of the Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić. The city represents a vision of what Višegrad could look like if the Renaissance and other historical periods had touched it. Architecturally, this place is a mixture of different eras and styles that alternated throughout the history of this area: Byzantine style, Ottoman period, Renaissance, and Classicism.

A walk along the main street allows visitors to travel back in time, combining fragments of the Renaissance, the Ottoman period, and Byzantium.

The construction of Andrićgrad began on June 28, 2011, on Vidovdan, and it was officially opened on June 28, 2014. Today, this center includes numerous cultural facilities, educational and scientific institutions, administrative buildings, and tourist and commercial business facilities. Among them, the Renaissance theater with 350 seats, the church of Saint Lazarus, which is a modified replica of the medieval monastery Visoki Dečani, and a multiplex with three cinemas and galleries stand out. The establishment of the Institute of Ivo Andrić with a center for Slavic studies and the Academy of Fine Arts is also planned.

In addition to tourist facilities, the complex also includes a hotel with 150 beds, two hostels, a Byzantine palace as an accommodation facility, restaurants, cafes, a pastry shop, a pub, a bookstore, a bank, a bakery, a pizzeria, and souvenir shops.

Andrićgrad is also a gathering place for film enthusiasts. The “Kustendorf” film festival, organized by Emir Kusturica, often uses this complex as one of the central locations for its activities. Events like these contribute to the international reputation of Andrićgrad as the cultural epicenter of the region.

Thanks to its location along the Drina, Andrićgrad also offers beautiful panoramic views and access to nearby natural attractions. Many visitors combine a visit to this complex with a boat ride on the Drina or a tour of the Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge. If you are heading towards Višegrad, be sure to visit Andrićgrad, an unmissable destination for those who want to experience a combination of history and culture.
