Construction and purpose: The tunnel was built between 1939 and 1942, during the Italian occupation of Rijeka. The original purpose of the tunnel was to provide shelter for the population in case of air raids during the Second World War. Considering the strategic position of Rijeka, the tunnel was an important part of the defense system of the city.

Length and structure: The tunnel stretches from the Cathedral of St. Vitus to Dolac Primary School. It is about 330 meters long, about 4 meters wide and the height varies between 2 and 6 meters. The tunnel has several exits that were intended for quick escape and access to the shelter.

World War II: During the war, the tunnel served as a shelter for the civilian population from air raids. It provided a haven for many residents of Rijeka.

After the war: After the end of the war, the tunnel was mostly neglected and not actively used. However, it retained its historical significance and remained part of the citizens’ collective memory.

Renovation: As part of the revitalization project, the tunnel was renovated and adapted for visitors. The renovation work included rehabilitation of the tunnel, installation of lighting, and information boards explaining the history and significance of the tunnel.

Multifunctional space: The tunnel also serves as a multifunctional space where various manifestations, exhibitions, and educational programs are organized, and on July 12 and 13, 2024, for the first time in Rijeka, the underground festival of wine, delicacies, and entertainment Rijeka Underground will be held in it.
