Five good reasons to visit Metlika!

Metlika is a nice small town in southeastern Slovenia, located on the left bank of the river Kolpa, along the border with Croatia. It is located in the heart of the Bela Krajina region.

The first written traces of Metlika date back to 1228, and the name of the town comes from the Slovenian name for the plant “metlika” (eng. tamaris), which grows in the local area.

Archaeological evidence points to the settlement of this area in prehistoric times. From around 1205, Metlika was part of the Carniola Kingdom, and in 1335 it received the city status. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was often attacked during Ottoman raids.

Here are five reasons why you should visit it!

  • Metlika has its castle, originally from the 15th century, which is located above the old part of the town. The castle was rebuilt after a fire in the 18th century. Today it has been turned into a local museum with the Kambič Gallery, where paintings by Slovenian artists are exhibited.

Here you can participate in a practical culinary workshop and learn how to make a traditional Belokran flatbread.

  • Kolpa River: Known for its warm crystal clear water, the Kolpa River is ideal for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. The gentle flow of the river and the picturesque coast make it a favorite among nature lovers and those looking for adventure.
