Celje, known as the city of counts, is best known for the Celjski noble family, which flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries. The castle was built in the 12th century, and over the years it served as a defensive fortress and the center of power of the Counts of Celje, who were one of the most influential families of that period.
The castle flourished during the reign of Frederick II. of Celje. However, after the death of the last count, specifically Ulrich II. of Celje, son of Fredrik II, in 1456, the castle lost its importance and slowly began to deteriorate.
FredriCK II also had a tragic love affair with Veronika Desinićka. It is a legend that tells about the forbidden love of a nobleman and an ordinary girl, to which Fridrik’s father strongly opposed the relationship, which is why Veronika ended tragically, while Fridrik was imprisoned in the tower that bears his name.

A little later, due to the state in which the castle was found, it was also used as a quarry, and in the 20th century, extensive renovations began to preserve the historical elements and ensure safety for visitors. Today it is Feidrick’s tower, one of the most famous attractions of the castle.

In addition to the tower, the castle also offers a walk along the restored walls, a wonderful view of the valley, and a visit to the permanent exhibition that shows life in the Celje era. In addition to historical tours, knightly battles, concerts, and cultural manifestations are held here during the summer, and one of the famous events is “Under the stars of Celjski”, which attracts visitors with its evening programs and vivid depictions of medieval life.
Celje castle is one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Slovenia. It has a history that takes you back to the Middle Ages, and legends enliven every corner of this magnificent castle.
Renovated towers, viewpoints, and numerous summer events make it the perfect destination for anyone who wants to feel the spirit of the past.
