Which country in the world has the most rivers? One really leads the way…

The world is rich in natural wonders, and rivers occupy a special place in that diversity. In addition to shaping landscapes, and climate and supporting life on Earth, rivers have always been key to the development of civilizations, economies, and cultures, from the Nile, the longest river in the world, to the Amazon giant, all the way to the Ganges in India, which carries a deep religious meaning.

But do you know which country dominates the planet with the largest network of watercourses?

When discussing countries rich in rivers, the number depends on the measurement method —relative to the area, by density, or absolute.

If we count in absolute terms, Brazil is the undoubted leader. On the other hand, countries like Bangladesh, whose territory is interwoven with more than 700 rivers in a relatively small area, lead in density. Canada and Russia, although huge in terms of territory, Canada and Russia have rivers distributed in distant and diverse regions, reducing their apparent density.

BRAZIL – THE UNQUESTIONABLE RULER OF RIVERS

Brazil leads the way with over 7,000 rivers that permeate its vast territory. The most famous and largest is the Amazon River, surrounded by a network of over 1,100 named tributaries, which makes up as much as 40% of the territory of this country. Its most important tributaries are Rio Negro, Madeira and Tapajós. The total length of this river network and its incredible capacity lead to the fact that Brazil has more rivers than any other country in the world.

Of course, Brazil’s climate and geography—tropical rains, huge basins, and mountain springs—make It a natural paradise for the formation of a rich watercourse.

The largest rivers in Brazil, in addition to the Amazon, are the Paraná, which runs through southern Brazil, and the São Francisco, a river known as the “river of integration” because it connects the interior of Brazil with the Atlantic coast.

But rivers in Brazil are not only a natural phenomenon, but the fundamental backbone of life and economy. The Amazon Basin is a global oxygen “factory” and is home to incredible biological diversity. Paraná provides energy to millions of inhabitants through hydroelectric plants such as Itaipú, one of the largest in the world, while São Francisco supports development in arid areas and serves irrigation, fishing, and transportation…

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Rivers are basic resources that need to be protected and maintained. Brazil, as the country with the largest number of rivers, faces the challenges of preserving these water giants in the age of climate change. These river networks not only shape the lives of Brazilians, but also the global ecosystem, and this is equally true for all other rivers in the world.

RIVERS ARE ALSO OF HUGE IMPORTANCE IN THE ADRIA REGION. IN SLOVENIA, CROATIA, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, MONTENEGRO, AND ALBANIA, RIVERS HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN KEY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THIS IS A REGION THAT ABUNDS IN RIVERS, MANY OF WHICH ARE AMONG THE CLEANEST IN EUROPE, AND WE HOPE THAT IT WILL REMAIN THAT WAY BECAUSE WHETHER IT IS THE MAJESTIC AMAZON OR THE EMERALD DRINA, OUR TASK IS TO PRESERVE THEM AS A HERITAGE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
