BIRTH OF THE SHRINE

The story of Morača begins in 1252, at a time when dynasties, faith, and the sword shaped the destinies of the Balkans. Stefan Vukanović, grandson of the great Stefan Nemanja, made a vow to build a shrine on the banks of the Morača River. Legend has it that a miracle inspired Stefan in this area: while he was wandering in the mountains, a vision of the Blessed Virgin appeared to him, and she showed him where the church should be built. This event, described in old records, was the reason why the monastery became more than an architectural undertaking from the very beginning – it was a vow, a prayer carved in stone.

MORACA AS A BASTION OF THE SPIRIT

The monastery was not only a monastery, but also a fortress, a school, an archive of national memory. When the Ottomans occupied Montenegro, Morača was burned and devastated, but not forgotten. In the 16th century, the people rebuilt it from the ashes, stone by stone, often at the risk of their own lives. The very act of rebuilding spoke of how alive Morača was in the hearts of its people: it was not just a church, it was who they were.
