Virpazar surprised us – here’s why we keep coming back
Somewhere between the waves of time and the stone of tradition, tucked into a bend in the road that leads to the largest lake in the Balkans, lies Virpazar – a small town with a soul older than the legends whispered in its squares. Here, where the Crmnica River flows into Lake Skadar, history and nature shape a landscape not easily forgotten.
If you’re looking for an authentic experience of Montenegro – a place that doesn’t pretend, but simply breathes – this is a story worth reading before you head south.

SQUARES THAT REMEMBER MORE THAN THEY REVEAL
Virpazar isn’t a town in the traditional sense – it’s more of a stage. Back in the days of the Ottoman Empire, it was a trading hub, a strategic meeting point for people from across the region. Boats, horses, and later trains brought travelers here – in fact, the Virpazar railway station, opened as early as 1908, was one of the first in Montenegro. Today, it’s still in use, but more by curious visitors than merchants or caravans.
A GATEWAY TO THE MAGICAL WORLD OF LAKE SKADAR
Virpazar is best known as the entry point to Lake Skadar – a majestic watery world full of reeds, hidden monasteries, pelicans, and stories that drift between the ripples. Dozens of boats and wooden barges wait for travelers eager to explore the lake’s heart – its islands with ancient churches, rocky bird sanctuaries, and slices of nature found nowhere else.
A boat ride across Lake Skadar is the only way to truly feel its magic. As you glide through endless water lilies, birds swoop around you, and on both sides rise fairytale-like hills and mountains. Fish swim beneath, reeds whisper beside you, and the sun dances on the surface… It’s hard to capture in photos. In truth, it’s hard to capture in words – none can quite describe what it feels like to be surrounded by that stillness, far from the shore and even further from everyday life.

BESAC FORTRESS – A SILENT WITNESS TO TURBULENT CENTURIES
Rising above the town like an older brother watching over it with quiet patience, the Besac Fortress stands tall. Built during the Ottoman era, this stronghold served for centuries as both a lookout and a shield. It was later used by the Montenegrins, and during World War I, it was taken over by the Austro-Hungarian army. Today, it has been restored and is open to visitors, offering breathtaking views: the deep blue of Lake Skadar, the green canopies of vineyards, and the sunlit rooftops of Virpazar below.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IN VIRPAZAR?
Beyond boat rides and fortress visits, Virpazar offers more than first meets the eye. You can taste local wine from Crmnica – a region known for its winemaking tradition since ancient times – or simply lose yourself in the calm of narrow streets, where locals sit beneath grapevines and the aromas of home-cooked meals drift from windows. Bike tours around the lake, kayaking, fishing, and even birdwatching – the options are many, and each one leads to peace and fullness.
WHERE TO STAY?
Virpazar offers a variety of accommodation options. We chose to stay at Hotel Pelikan, a place that offers more than just a bed – it tells a story. This hotel has been welcoming guests for over 60 years, and its staff, who know Virpazar inside out, are always ready to suggest what’s worth seeing, tasting, or experiencing. The rooms carry an old-world charm, and the restaurant serves local specialties, especially lake fish prepared traditionally.
