The Renaissance Festival in Koprivnica takes you back to the Middle Ages with fire, knights and old crafts! Here’s what to expect!
If there is one event that can launch you straight into the heart of the Middle Ages, without a time machine, it is undoubtedly the Renaissance Festival in Koprivnica.
Although I thought last year that nothing could surprise me anymore when it comes to events in the region, walking the city walls of Koprivnica among knights, court jesters, entertainers, and merchants completely changed my mind. That is why this year, without hesitation, I am planning a return visit. From August 21 to 24, 2025, Koprivnica once again becomes the stage for the largest historical spectacle in Croatia, and quite literally so.

WHAT IS THE RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL?
It is the largest medieval event in Croatia and one of the five most important in all of Europe. The festival embraces the living history concept through reenactments of medieval life, crafts, gastronomy, music, games, and warfare. But this is not just any themed fair. It goes a step further. Every detail, from ceramic cups to woven fabrics made on hand looms, is created in the spirit of the era. No plastic, no modern instruments, everything is authentic. And everything is alive.
THE 2025 THEME: ENTERTAINMENT AND JESTERS
This year’s main theme is “jesters and comedic arts,” which means you can expect a true festival of laughter, performances, and fun. Court jesters, jugglers, stilt walkers, and theatrical acts filled with humor bring to life the kind of Renaissance entertainment once enjoyed by both kings and peasants. Laughter will mix with the scent of grilled meat and the distant sound of drums.
This lively Renaissance parade begins on Thursday, August 21, and continues until Sunday night, with programs running from morning until late evening.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
Last year, as soon as I stepped onto the city ramparts, I was greeted by a colorful procession of people from all over Europe, from Ukrainians in medieval costumes to Polish knights and belly dancers from Romania. And all of them, every single one, looked like they had walked straight off a movie set. Only this time, you are not the audience. You are part of the scene.
This year, the program is even richer. From the largest open-air exhibition of traditional crafts, where you can see blacksmiths, rope makers, potters, leatherworkers, weavers, chandlers, and many more in action, to life in knightly camps, sword and mace battles, crossbow shooting, and sieges of the city walls.
There is a brewery serving nettle beer, Renaissance rugby, mystical night attacks on the city, and even the leper village set up under the bridge. Trust me, you will not remain indifferent.
Just like last year, the festival opens on Thursday evening with a fiery show by the Koprivnica Musketeers and Haramians. This impressive historical unit, with its muskets, halberds, swords, and cannons, creates a spectacle that shakes the ground beneath your feet.
Friday brings a full wave of performances across two stages, from Slovenian and Italian groups to the sounds of Pipers of Transylvania and a dazzling equestrian tournament.
Saturday and Sunday offer even more. The entire area fills not only with sounds but also with the aromas of wild game, gingerbread, nettle beer, and mead.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR?
Honestly? It is hard to choose just one. Maybe the moment when, laughing like a child, I watched a maiden fall into a large wooden tub full of water after someone hit the target with a wooden ball. Or when I got lost in a wooden labyrinth and found myself in an improvised marketplace filled with handmade treasures. Or when I stood, ceramic beer mug in hand, in front of a musician playing a tune on an ancient instrument so strange that I could not decide whether I wanted to listen or run away.
But what impressed me most was something else. The feeling that you are not just an observer, but a participant. There are no barriers, no off-limits areas. Everyone addresses you as “my lord,” offers you handcrafted goods, invites you to try, join in, and learn.
