High above Saranda, where the Adriatic Sea blends into the shades of the Ionian Sea, lies a place that, even in ruins, has preserved the powerful silence of past centuries. The Monastery of the Forty Saints, known in Albanian as Manastiri i 40 Shenjtorëve, is one of the most significant historical symbols of southern Albania, and at the same time, a site that reveals the connection between the name of the city and the legend of the forty martyrs.

Built in the 6th century, at a time when Byzantium still shaped the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region, the monastery was dedicated to the soldier-martyrs of Sebaste, whose veneration spread throughout the East. Its importance was such that from the Greek expression Agioi Saranta – Forty Saints, came the very name Saranda, the town that still stretches beneath the hills where the monastery ruins are located.

Walking through this site, you encounter the remains of a monumental basilica, once forty meters long, with several apses and crypts that testify to the mastery of architects of the time. Underground galleries, cisterns, and fragments of frescoes still reveal that it was once a spiritual and pilgrimage center, and every crack in the stone tells a story of times when believers from across the region gathered here. From the top, the view opens onto Saranda, the island of Corfu, and the endless sea, making it easy to imagine how the monks once lived surrounded by such breathtaking sights.

The fate of the monastery followed the turbulent history of the Balkans. For centuries, it endured Ottoman incursions and neglect, only to be finally destroyed during World War II by Allied bombardment. In the communist era, it served as a military base, which further damaged what little remained of its former glory. Today, only ruins remain, yet they radiate an atmosphere stronger than the walls themselves.

Local people still keep alive many legends about this place. Tales are told of forty saints watching over the city, of underground passages leading to hidden relics, and of frescoes that were once so vivid they seemed alive, while today only faded traces of color remain. According to one story, the monastery functioned until the 19th century, though with interruptions, and it was only the destruction of war and revolutionary upheavals in the 20th century that led to its abandonment.
