A discovery in Leskovec pri Krškem! Gostilna Kunst completely won us over

If your journey takes you to Leskovec pri Krškem and at that very moment you feel your stomach craving something proper, know that you are in the right place. The same thing happened to us. Quite by chance, we stopped where hunger stops being a problem and becomes a pleasant experience. That is how we discovered Restaurant Kunst, known in Slovenia as Gostilna Kunst, a place that already came with nothing but recommendations.

Behind this name stands a family story that has spanned almost six decades. It all began in 1966, when grandfather Feliks and grandmother Tončka opened the Šempeter Inn. In 2015, the family expanded their story by purchasing Hotel Kunst in Leskovec, near Krško. Today, the business is run by the third generation, who continue the tradition with the same dedication, striving to ensure that every guest leaves satisfied and eager to return.

The surname Kunst, inherited from ancestors who were artists from the Czech lands, means art in the German language. These artists, known as Künstler, painted frescoes whose traces can still be seen today in the church and chapels on the Holy Mountains above Bistrica ob Sotli.

Such a story immediately encouraged us to sit down and see what they had to offer. As it was the weekend, more precisely Saturday, Restaurant Kunst had a special menu. We could choose between the house specialty priced at 30 euros, which starts with a beef or daily soup, followed by roasted rooster served with potatoes with sour cream, mlinci, red cabbage, chestnuts and salad, and finished with dessert, or the Saturday menu for 24 euros, which also begins with soup and offers a choice of braised beef in sauce with cottage cheese štrukli, root vegetables and salad, roasted Krškopolje pork, or white fish prepared in parchment with salad. A dessert is also included at the end.

The house specialty immediately caught our eye, so the decision was not difficult at all. Soon, a mushroom soup arrived at the table and genuinely impressed us. This was already the second mushroom soup I had tried in Slovenia, and all I can say is that they truly know how to bring out the full depth of flavour. Hunger was already serious, the aroma of the soup filled the restaurant, and my thoughts wandered so much that I even forgot to photograph it.

Shortly after, the roasted rooster with mlinci and all the accompaniments arrived. There is not much philosophy here. In the end, the plate was completely empty. Everything disappeared down to the very last bite.

For something sweet, we were served a cheesecake in raspberry sauce, along with coffee that nicely rounded off the meal. While enjoying the dessert, my colleague and I commented on how everything was spot on. From the friendly and unobtrusive service to the homemade, fine food that takes you back to childhood for a moment, as if it had been prepared by a grandmother, without rush and with a lot of care and love.

As in all our articles, I also bring you a clear price overview here. The house specialty cost 30 euros per person, we had two mineral waters for a total of 5 euros, and two espressos priced at 3.20 euros. Altogether, the bill came to 68.20 euros, which, considering the quality and generous portions, is excellent value. I will definitely be returning to Gostilna Kunst. It comes with the Adria.fun recommendation.
