Discover Trasimeno: a pearl among Italian lakes

Lake Trasimeno covers an area of ​​128 square kilometers, but its average depth is only 4 meters. Located at an altitude of 258 meters, this lake has a tectonic origin, formed more than 300,000 years ago. Its surroundings abound with hills covered with olive groves, vineyards, and forests.

Historically, the lake is known for the Battle of Lake Trasimeno in 217 BC. BC, during which the Carthaginian general Hannibal ambushed the Roman legions, inflicting one of the greatest defeats in history. In the nearby village of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, there is a museum dedicated to this historical event.

The lake has three islands: Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese, and Isola Minore. Isola Maggiore is the only inhabited island, known for its magical atmosphere, historic churches, and tradition of lace making. Isola Polvese is a nature reserve ideal for lovers of peace and nature exploration. Here you can see rare plant and animal species that enrich the ecosystem of the lake.

The shores of the lake are adorned with charming villages such as Castiglione del Lago, which boasts the Rocca del Leone fortress with an incredible view of the lake. Passignano sul Trasimeno offers historic sights such as La Rocca fortress and the lakeside promenade, while Panicale attracts visitors with its medieval walls and art treasures.

The flora and fauna of the lake are impressively rich. White water lilies and reed beds are home to birds such as wild ducks, cormorants, and kingfishers. Fishing is also an important activity, with frequent catches of carp and eel.
